India's burgeoning renewable energy sector faces a growing economic challenge as electricity prices on exchanges frequently plunge to near-zero levels. This phenomenon is primarily driven by an increasing surplus of green power during peak daytime generation hours, which now often outpaces immediate demand. Distribution companies (discoms), mandated to purchase renewable energy, are increasingly forced to offload this surplus onto power exchanges. This practice leads to a significant divergence between their higher contracted procurement costs for renewable power and the substantially lower, sometimes negligible, selling prices realized on the open market. The resulting financial losses for discoms create a disincentive for further renewable energy uptake, potentially hindering India's ambitious clean energy transition targets. The underlying issue stems from grid infrastructure limitations and demand-side management challenges that prevent efficient absorption and storage of all generated renewable power. While installed renewable capacity continues to expand rapidly, the lack of commensurate advancements in grid flexibility, energy storage solutions, and dynamic demand response mechanisms exacerbates the oversupply problem. This imbalance directly impacts the revenue streams of renewable energy producers, potentially deterring future investment in new projects and expansions. Economically, the sustained erosion of wholesale power prices during generation peaks jeopardizes the long-term viability of renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs).
