Telecom Tower Firms Seek Diesel Exemption Amidst Service Disruption Warnings

The Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (Dipa), representing major telecom tower companies, has appealed to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for an exemption from impending diesel generator restrictions. The industry body warns that without such an exemption, nationwide telecom services could face significant disruptions, impacting economic activity reliant on digital connectivity. The core of the issue stems from regulations aimed at curbing pollution, which may restrict the use of diesel generators, a critical backup power source for over 700,000 telecom towers across India. These towers currently draw 70% of their power from the grid, with the remaining 30% supplied by diesel generators, especially during power outages in remote or underserved areas. The dependency is particularly pronounced in regions with unreliable grid electricity, where continuous diesel operation ensures network uptime. Dipa's letter to the DoT, dated Friday, emphasized the urgent need for clarity or a specific exemption. The association highlighted that any blanket application of diesel curbs would directly jeopardize the operational resilience of the country's digital infrastructure. Given the expansive reach of telecom services, from financial transactions to emergency communications and e-commerce, a disruption in connectivity carries broad economic implications.
